What a great start to the year...
This week was the start of the Euro Pro Tour season and Frilford heath golf club was hosting the PDC Golf Championship. Frilford is one of the best venues on the Euro Pro Tour which I love to play and is always kept in top class condition. After my win last week on the Eagle Tour, my golf game is in great shape and I was feeling very confident for a great week ahead.
I arrived on Monday for the official practice day and it was nice to play the course again as it was slightly different to how it was playing a few weeks ago. I created a solid course strategy, mapped the greens and got a few hours practice in to finish off the day.
Round one had begun and it was a wet one for everyone, rain had been forecasted all day so tough conditions all round. I played some very steady golf today; I didn’t hit the ball to my best ability but scored very well. My putting was great inside 10 ft which helped get off to a good start to the event with a score of 70 (-2).
Round two was moving day, I was 4 shots back from the leader and a low round was required to put me a good position for the final day. I achieved this by scoring 68 (-4) placing me in second position over night. I left the golf course feeling very positive and focused, looking forward to tomorrow’s final round.
After having a good night’s sleep, I arrived at the golf course slightly earlier than usual for a pre warm up and sky sports interviews. Of course, I was slightly nervous at the beginning of the round which I guess is normal, however I have been in a winning position on the Euro Pro Tour several times over the years so my main goal was to learn from my previous mistakes and play to win.
My round got off to a shaky start, making a poor bogy on the first hole from a good position which was slightly disappointing. I soon steadied the ship and made a great bounce back birdie on the 2nd hole and then holed out a bunker shot on the 5th which got the momentum going. I soon noticed a few cameras started to gather around after I birdied holes 7 and 10 for a total score of -10.
It came to the final 8 holes were I was feeling confident but also slightly nervous at this point. Unfortunately I made two 3 putts on holes 11 and 17 and also making a few loose swings. The back nine was a little struggle to say the least!
I signed for a score of 70 (-2) which was just one shot off winning! Overall I finished 2nd place, which I am extremely proud of and is a huge achievement for my personal development. This has given me the belief and confidence in myself to help me progress further throughout the year.
Bring on next week at Burhill Golf Club!
